My business partner in our company ForeFront Real Estate LLC has literally been talking about holding a yard sale for years. Her mom was full of yard sale tips. It might as well be on her bucket list. (I’m trying to tell her she needs to make one – see mine here).

So I said, “Let’s do it. Why not?”

We did. And we sold stuff Like a Boss. Watch the video below or watch here.

We gathered ‘stuff’ over a few weeks and then had a marketing idea. I had a car for sale and we also had an incredible real estate listing available from our friends and clients David and Anna at Phoenix Avenue LLC.

I thought, “What if we can sell stuff at a house, sell a car at a house, and even sell the house at the house?!?”

So we marketed with this in mind. We put a craigslist ad listing our items for sale. We blasted the sale on Facebook for a little social media touch. We sent out an email to agents marketing the sale of the home, car, and tons of cool stuff [ironically we got an offer on the property the day prior to the sale]. We put out directional bandit signs in the area the 24 hours before the sale.

The morning of… We woke early and headed to the ‘job’ site. I hoped that the people would come. 7:50 AM – we waited. And they came. Boy did they come. By 8:30 AM we had already made $100 and we were still setting stuff out. Some of the ladies buying stuff were helping us unpack the goods (this meant they got first pick!)

By the end of the day we made a good $300. We immediately took the remaining items to Goodwill. So not bad to make $300 when you were planning to give it all away anyway.

But it was work – gathering stuff, setting up, packing down, delivering to Goodwill. I would much rather just enact my new found life plan. This involves taking more time to reflect before making a purchase. I try to wait at least 60 days before purchasing. If I still want it after this time, I’ll being to shop more seriously for a deal on the item. The funny thing is that I will do this even for inexpensive items, which I’m sure seems goofy to some. Also, I enact the ‘one in, one out’ rule. This ensures that I don’t collect too many items and need to have another sale!

If you’re wanting to change your lifestyle and shed some of your goods, a great resource is Man vs. Debt Go out there and run your small business Like a Boss.
